영화 대본으로 공부하는 법

윗 글을 읽고 나도 해보고 싶다! 해서 시작.

내가 최근에 제일 재밌게 본 영화인 인턴으로 시작.

맨날 끝까지 못하는게 문제이긴 한데 ㅠㅠ

어쨌든 꾸준히 새로운 것들의 첫 페이지를 공부하니 그나마 괜찮다고 자기연민중...

1.     먼저 본다

Scene #1

Ben: Freud said, “Love and work. Work and love. That’s all there is.”

~ Love, work 둘다 명사/동사 가능.

That’s all은 ‘그게 전부다’, there is 는 ‘거기 있는’, 합쳐서 ‘그게 거기있는 전부다’

다른 때 쓰면 거기서 끝이지만 여기선 사랑과 일에 대해 말했으므로 인생에 있어서 라고 해석 가능한 듯.

 

Well, I’m retired, and my wife is dead.

Dead 와 Died 차이

Dead (adj) means no longer alive, died (v) means to stop living.

 

As you can imagine, that’s given me some time on my hands.

Give time~ 시간을 주다, 자주 같이 쓰이는 듯

time on my hands는 내가 여분의 시간을 갖게 될 때 씀. In my hands는 안 씀. I have plenty of free time 과 같은 뜻. 두 손에 시간을 쥘 수는 없지만 비유적 표현.

 

My wife’s been gone for three and half years.

 

I miss her in every way. And retirement?

In every way = in every direction/manner/respect

 

That is an ongoing, relentless effort in creativity.

*ongoing = 진행 중인

*relentless = 1. 수그러들지 않는, 끈질긴 2. 가차없는

Cf) relent = 1. (거부하다가 마침내) 동의하다 2. (기세/강도 등이) 수그러들다

Effort 뒤에 전치사 in 써서 뭐에 대한 노력인지 표현

 

At first, I admit I enjoyed the novelty of it.

*novelty = state or quality of being novel, new, or unique

Admit, Enjoy 둘 다 뒤에 목적어 가짐, admit은 현재형, enjoy는 과거형으로 지금 그 때 즐긴걸 인정한다는 말임

 

Sort of felt like I was playing hooky.

*play hooky = to not go to school or some other event, 땡땡이 치다

그 당시에 그렇게 느꼈다고 이어서 말하는 거라서 그냥 ‘felt’로 시작한 듯

 

I used all the miles I’d saved and traveled the globe.

*miles = 여기서는 ‘마일리지’, airline miles 검색하면 나옴

I had saved 니까 그 전까지 다 모아뒀던 마일리지.

Travel the globe 는 아마 ‘세계를 여행하다’ 겠지. 구글링하면 많이 쓰이는 단어임을 알 수 있음.

 

The problem was, no matter where I went, as soon as I got home, the nowhere-to-be thing hit me like a ton of bricks.

Nowhere 아무데도 아니란 뜻인데 nowhere to be thing 이 아무리 검색해도 안 나온다. 느낌엔 아무데도 속하지 못한 상태 같은데 이건 좀 찜찜함

 

I realized the key to this whole deal was to keep moving.

Key 뒤에는 to 가 쓰이고, ‘계속 ~하다’ 할 땐 keep 뒤에는 ~ing 가 쓰인다

 

Get up, get out of the house, and go somewhere. Anywhere.

집에 나간다고 할 때 the 를 붙이나 봄. Get out of the house

 

Come rain or shine, I’m at my Starbucks by 7:15.

My starbucks 라고 한다… 나는 여기서 좀 찡했음…. 스벅에 있을 땐 at starbucks

몇 시’까지’ 라고 할 때 by ‘time’. 특히 to time 은 그 시간 까지 지속된 것을 말하면 by time 은 그 때까지만 하면 되는 상황. 7시 15분까지 도착한다는 거니까 by time

*come rain or shine = whatever happens, in any sort of weather, nomatter whether it rains or the sun shines. 그냥 문장 앞뒤에 넣어서 쓰는 듯.

 

Man1: Excuse me, mind if we join you?

Ben: No

Man2: Hey. How are you?

 

Ben: Can’t explain it, but it makes me feel part of something.

How do I spend the rest of my days?

My days 에 s 붙는다. 내가 자주 빼먹는 실수

 

You name it. Golf, books, movies, pinochle.

Tried yoga, learned to cook, bought some plants, took classes in mandarin.

*you name it = 뭐든지, 전부, Everything one can think of, anything

*pinochle = 피노클이란 이름의 카드놀이

Try yoga 에는 전치사 없고, learn to cook 에는 to cook 이 ‘요리하기’라는 뜻의 동명사, class in mandarin 에선 in 이 쓰였고 ‘수업을 듣다’할 때는 take classes 함

 

~~Chinese~~

Translation – “belive me, I’ve tried everything.”

 

And then, of course, there are the funerals.

So many more than I could imagine.

 

The only traveling I do these days is out to San Diego to visit my son and his family.

They’re great. I love them to pieces.

*love sb to pieces = to love very much

구글링해보면 best answer 중에 “I love you to pieces means that if you were broken up into a million pieces, I would love every single one. Every aspect of you. Everything that makes you “you” I absolutely love.”

But to be honest, I think I probably relied on them way more than I should.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an unhappy person. Quite the contrary.

*don’t get me wrong = 오해하지는 마, you should clearly understand what I mean

 

I just know there’s a hole in my life, and I need to fill it.

*본인이 이해 안가거나 잘 모르거나 어색하게 느껴지는 것들만 정리해봤음

*대본은 구하질 못해서 영자막 보고 받아 적었음

*난 맨 첨에 나오는 배경음악이 좋더라. 여러번 들어도 질리지 않음
