To reassure the student

1) reassure

-> 먼저 assure 을 봐야겠다

sure이 확실하다는 뜻으로 자주 쉽게 써서 익숙한 단어라고 생각했는데 정확하게 잘 알고 있지 못해서 틀렸던 문제였다. 

assure:

1. To inform positively, as to remove doubt: assured us that the train would be on time.

2. To cause to feel sure: a gesture that assured her of his devotion.

3. To give confidence to; reassure.

4. To make certain; ensure: "Nothing in history assures the success of our civilization" (Herbert J. Muller).

5. To make safe or secure: "We would rather forgo certain benefits in order to be assured against certain evils" (Alfred E. Smith).

6. Chiefly British To insure, as against loss.

구글뉴스 검색의 결과로는

- Police assured the parents of kidnapped woman

- We will rescue your daughter, police assure parents

- Juliana Down assure fans the show will go on

의심을 없애주고 안심시켜주는 뉘앙스, 확실히 못박아주고 보장해주는 느낌이다. 

우리나라에서 '확실하다'가 주는 느낌은 '정확하게 그렇게 될 것이다' 인데(나만 그런가?)

영어에서 sure이 주는 느낌은 보장하다, 장담컨대, 그렇게 생각한다, 와 같이 정말 fact로써 '확실히' 그렇게 된다는 것과는 조금 다른 느낌이다. 의지나 심리적 요인이 더 강하달까?

여기에 '재차, 다시' 라는 의미의 re- 가 붙으면 어떻게 될까

reassure:

1. to restore to assurance or confidence:

His praise reassured me.

to assure again.

to reinsure.

다시 assure 해준다 라는 범위에서 크게 벗어나지 않는다.

즉, 다시 용기를 북돋아주고 안심시켜주다, 다시 보장해준다 이런 뜻이다. 

방금 문제에서 보기를 잘못 골라 틀린 이유는 reassure 에서 assure 의 의미를 확인시켜주다, 확실히 해주다 라고 sure에 비롯된 오역을 했기 때문이다. 

assure의 이해를 돕기 위한 영작

- My mom assure me I could be better person

reassure의 영작

- Teacher reassure him he could go on his work

- Minister reassure the policy will be worth for all citizen.

그렇다면 내가 헷갈렸던 '확신시켜주다', '확인시켜주다' 는 어떻게 써야할까?

그렇다

confirm:

verb (used with object)

2번 뜻을 보면 assurance 를 알게해주는데 다른 assurance 가 아니라 definite 한 assurance 다.

definite 가 확실하고 확고한, 이라는 뜻이므로 내가 한국어에서 타인을 확인시키고 확실시 하는 것은 바로 confirm인 것을 알 수 있다. 이에 반해 reassure 은 나한테는 동의-sure-의 의미를 재차 확인하는 느낌을 준다.

문제에서 나왔던 상황은 어려운 과제를 하겠다는 학생에게 교수가 '너 그러면 아마 일이 엄청 많고 힘들어질걸?' 하는 말을 왜했냐는 거였는데 나는 재차 너 그래도 그거 하겠다는 거지? 하고 확인시키는, 다짐시키는 의미로 이해했던 것이다. 그건 근데 reassure과는 다른 느낌이다. reassure은 괜찮아요, 넌 할 수 있어요 느낌인걸 이제 알겠다.

(정답은 to warn the student 였음 ㅋㅋ.........)

내가 느낀대로 정답이 나왔으려면 Professor reassure the student 가 아니라 

The student reassure the student 상황이고 

To get an assurance from the student가 맞는 답이 됐을 것이다.

여기서 짚고 가는 

assurance:

noun

a positive declaration intended to give confidence:

full confidence; freedom from doubt; certainty:

to act in the assurance of success.

역시 '긍정적인' '자신감' '약속' '의심 없는' '믿음' 등의 감정적인 단어가 많이 들어갔다.

assurance 는 assure 을 하는 주어가 목적어인 대상에게 '주는' 것이므로 내가 오역한 것이 재차 맞음을 확인했다. 

- After googling, the results reassure me I was wrong and misunderstood.

역시 영어와 한국어는 1대1 대응을 해서 단어만 '확실' 이런식으로 이해하면 곤란하다...내 영어의 단점이 여기서 이렇게 잘 드러나니 좋다. 극복하자.

2) contribute to

아까부터 생김새는 무지 친숙하고 쉬워보이는데 내가 '정확하고 확실히' 알고 있지 못해 틀려버리는 것들을 재 정리 하고 있다.

내가 중학교 때부터 암기가 싫어서 대략 그 '느낌'만을 가지고 때려맞추는 식으로 공부해서 수능 1등급도 맞았는데 5지선다 있는 한국식 영어에서는 그게 먹히는 데 그걸 쓸 수 없는 불완전한 영어가 될 수 밖에 없더라.

이 단어도 수백번 본 거 같은데 영작할 때 한번도 써본적 없는 그런 단어다. 

먼저 정의를 보자.

verb (used with object), contributed, contributing.

to give (money, time, knowledge, assistance, etc.) to a common supply, fund, etc., as for charitable purposes.

to furnish (an original written work, drawing, etc.) for publication:

to contribute stories to a magazine.

He contributes to many charities.

Idioms

5.

contribute to, to be an important factor in; help to cause:

A sudden downpour contributed to the traffic jam.

contribute to 는 그 자체로 많이 쓰여선지 Idioms로 아예 따로 뜻이 나와있다.

동사 contribute 자체로는 목적어 있이/없이 둘다 쓸 수 있고 둘다 '돈, 시간, 지식, 도움 등'을 제공하는 것으로 나온다. 한마디로 뭔가 추상적인 기여를 할 때 쓴다고 볼 수 있겠다.

- My boss contribute most of his time to our company (t.t)

- It was my pleasure to contribute to your team

이러한 일반 용법에도 contribute to 라는 포맷을 갖게 되는데 이는 '어디에' 기여했는지 보여주기 위함이렷다.

그렇다면 숙어로 따로 나온 뜻은 무엇일까

기여하다는 말을 하도 오랫동안 쓰다보니까 그냥 좀 도와준 수준이 아니라 아예 그것이 원인의 전부가 되거나 거의 대부분이 된 경우, 10-20%의 도움이 아니라 그 contribute 의 행위자가 80-90%의 역할을 하게 된 경우들이 생겼을 것이다. 이런 경우들에 대해 약간 비유하듯이 쓰게 된 것들이 굳어진게 아닐까?(추측)

사전에 나온 예시도 호우가 내려서 차들이 막힌다는 의미인데 결국 폭우가 교통체증의 '원인'임을 나타내고 있다.

기여한다기 보다는 원인과 결과 또는 키 팩터(!!)가 된다는 것을 보여주는 숙어라 할 수 있겠다.

대부분 내가 이 단어를 쓰지 않은 이유를 알겠다. 나를 비롯한 많은 한국인들은 이 상황에서 because of~~ put much more efforts on ~~ 블라블라 이런 식으로 썼을거같다 ㅠㅠㅠ(영어 잘하시는 분들 빼고)

이제 좀 because 에서 벗어나자. 한 문단내에 because 만 5개 들어가면 얼마나 초딩 같은가.

심지어 미국 초딩도 안그럴듯........

to 뒤에 명사가 와야함!

They could see this as an old hat.

3) old-hat

n. an old-fashioned thing or person; an outmoded thing or person. 

Fig. old- fashioned; outmoded. That's a silly idea. It's old hat. Hardly anybody uses typewriters anymore. That's just old hat.

한 물 간거라는 뜻이 유추 가능해서 문제풀이에는 별 영향을 못 미쳤지만 내 자신의 단어 어휘 풀을 넓히기 위해서 정리만 해둠.
